Worship Notes: Tomorrow, we will sing a new song for the first time, “All Sufficient Merit.” The text is loaded with Biblical imagery and scripture — so much that there’s really no one passage that can possibly summarize it. Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” is foundational for the first verse:

All sufficient merit shining like the sun
A fortune I inherit by no work I have done
My righteousness I forfeit at my Savior’s cross
Where all sufficient merit did what I could not

I inherit the righteousness of God by forfeiting mine, I inherit life and eternal life through no work of my own, but only by the grace of God. It was the grace, mercy, love, and merit of God that reconciled me to Him, something I simply could not do on my own.
