Worship Notes
Ever notice how the first or the last of something are generally really important moments? The first time you saw your spouse. The last time you spoke to your grandmother. In scripture, the first thing we learn is that God is the Creator and the last thing is that He is coming soon, once again as Creator, restoring all things with the creation of the new heavens and new earth.
Amid that last message from scripture is also the last recorded song in scripture. Revelation 19 records the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and the great celebration following the final battle. It was a wedding feast filled with joy and song. The people from every tribe and tongue gather to tell of the goodness and faithfulness of God by singing His praise. “The Lord Almighty Reigns” captures the text:
There's an endless song, waiting to be sung
With the voice of every tribe, the sound of every tongue.
When the bride of Christ, on that day of days
Brings with joy unto the land, a multitude of praise.
We will join the feast, Rest from battles won
Tell with great rejoicing, all the wonders, God has done.
And like the roar of mighty seas, and rolls of thunder, hear His people sing.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! For the Lord Almighty reigns
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! For the Lord, our God, the Almighty reigns!
In that way, our worship is intended as a glimpse of the eternal worship. We gather on Sunday, a day of feasting, to rest from the battles of the week, to share with one another what good things God has done in our lives, and then to respond to Him with singing so loud and so filled with joy that it sounds almost like the roar of the ocean or the loud claps of thunder in a storm.
Hallelujah! The Lord, our God, the Almighty Reigns!
