Worship Notes

Romans 6:3-4 – “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”

We were dead in our trespasses, buried beneath the weight of our sin and shame.  Our sin literally entombs us and we have absolutely no way of escape through our own strength.  The imagery is powerful.  If you were buried, six feet under the ground, could you dig your own way out?  Or to be historically accurate, if you were in a tomb and the opening were blocked by an enormous rock, could you move it?  Of course not!  And even more so, could you escape either of those circumstances if you were dead?  That’s absurd.

But that is exactly what Jesus did.  He cried out to Lazarus and he arose from death and walked right out of his grave.  When Jesus himself, was crucified, He rose on the third day, breaking the chains of sin, death, and the grave!

I was buried beneath my shame, who could carry that kind of weight?
It was my tomb, 'til I met You

You called my name, then I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness, into Your glorious day
You called my name, and I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness, into Your glorious day

What a thing to celebrate!  What a gift of grace and love that God sent His Son to die for us!  For believers, God sent His son to break the chains of sin and death, adopt us as sons and daughters, and welcome us into His family with the benefits of Jesus’ righteousness.  Thanks be to God that He called my name and I ran out of that grave!
