Worship Notes
Introduction: Curtsy or Bow. Address: “Your Royal Highness” or “Your Majesty.” Attire: Formalwear. Position: A mere subject
These are the basic codes of conduct for meeting royalty. It always amazes me that when I come into the presence of the King of Kings, as a believer, my position has been changed from merely a subject to a Son of the Most High, adopted into His family.
I suspect that this is part of the imagery that Charles Hutchinson Gabriel was seeing in his mind’s eye as he penned the words to I Stand Amazed in the Presence. In the Old Testament, people dared not enter God’s presence and they certainly didn’t look directly at Him, but Jesus changed all of that. As disciples of Jesus, we can enter boldly before His throne of grace and mercy. How can that be? This verse of the hymn gives us the answer:
He took my sins and my sorrows, He made them His very own;
He bore the burden to Calv’ry, and suffered, and died alone.
My sin became His. He paid the price for my sin at Calvary, dying alone the death that I deserved. In exchange, I received His righteousness. What a gift! And so now, though with the humility of a once condemned sinner, I STAND amazed in the presence of God, unafraid to see Him face to face. How marvelous is my Savior’s love for me!
I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene,
And wonder how He could love me, sinner condemned, unclean.
How marvelous! How wonderful! And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful! Is my Savior’s love for me!
